OPEN HOUSE!

Schedule a time to come out and see what the excitement is all about. Ask students what they think of the classes.

These classes are not necessarily designed to help the individual learn their instrument from scratch. So a basic understanding will make the experience a more successful experience.

Refresher, curious or always wanting to switch from classical to learning about improvisation. This course is geared toward introduction to the blues and improvisation. This will focus on foundational aspects of the blues, what makes the blues tick. Beginning with an examination of the blues scale and simple 12 bar blues progression. Classes are intentionally smaller to accommodate “spreading out”.

Jam Session™  is also designed to get you to develop your solos from the instant you start improvising. You will be given step-by-step techniques to help your improvisation based upon a blues-based storytelling model that applies to all styles. Using a minimal number of techniques, you will improve your understanding in the the art of improvisation.

There are definitely greater challenges for adults learning that the younger students I have taught over the years especially in Jam Session Open Mic situations. Adults are used to feeling competent. The hardest thing to overcome as an adult playing a new instrument is getting over how bad you sound at first. That fear of sounding subpar makes it hard to even start. We all just have to get over that.

Encouragement – Adults need to realize that it takes time, that it’s not quick, but if they keep working at it, it will get better.

No negative self-talk – Many adults have misconceptions when they start. They have seen musicians and think it looks so easy.

Do-it-yourself-Or not -Some musical newcomers featured in Making Time for Making Music tried to learn a new instrument on their own, using methods books or watching instructional videos on YouTube. Most eventually found a private teacher or group lessons.

Group support – Many newcomers have taken private lessons; others prefer group lessons. Group lessons are a low-stress, friendly way to learn. Support at a local Jam Session or Open Mic by your peers, goes a long way.

Ease into it –  Some newcomers ease into lessons gradually, not making a commitment until they’re sure this is something they are ready to tackle.

Consider beginner-friendly ensembles and classes Instruction is built into some ensembles with also opportunities to perform out into the public to test your new skills.
